69 Years of Philosophy in the World

This week, the International Organization New Acropolis celebrates its 69th anniversary, marking the beginning of its 70th year of existence. 

Compared to the lifespan of past schools of philosophy such as Plato's Academy and the Stoa, seventy years is relatively short. Yet it has been long enough to touch the hearts and minds of the many thousands of people who have walked through our doors in search of knowledge, friendship, and purpose. 

Some have attended a single lecture. Others have taken an introductory course. Many have continued their journey as members in our regular study program. Each, in their own way, has encountered the timeless teachings of humanity and had the opportunity to bring them into daily life - fostering greater self-knowledge, a deeper understanding of society and nature, and a stronger commitment to positive conscious action. 

Today, that work continues through more than 450 centers in over 50 countries, where thousands of activities in philosophy, culture, and volunteering take place every year.

Do we have detractors? Of course - like any other organization trying to do something in this world. As Theodore Roosevelt's "Man in the Arena" speech suggests, there are two kinds of people who draw no criticism: saints, and those who never act at all. We are neither. We are philosophers, lovers of wisdom, who have come to improve the world through good will and efficient action - first improving ourselves, and then everything around us, because no authentic improvement in the human condition can be realized without self-awareness.
